Weinman was the winner of the national competition to design the new U.S. half dollar. Born in Germany in the city of Karlsruhe, Weinman immigrated to the United States and became a prominent American sculptor.The face of the coin is a full figure of Lady Liberty in a long gown with an American flag across her shoulders and billowing around her. She is walking while looking to the left with her hand held open before her and in her left hand are olive branches, the symbol of peace. The sun rises from the lower left.The design for the reverse side of the 1/2 dollar coin is an American eagle perched on a rock in a defiant stance, symbolizing the enduring American patriot spirit of liberty against all odds.
